A San Jose standoff ended peacefully this morning after a man who had refused to leave a house with his elderly mother inside surrendered to authorities.

Karl Edward Frazier, 55, surrendered at 8:20 a.m. and was arrested on charges of brandishing a weapon in the presence of a police officer and resisting arrest, San Jose Police Department spokeswoman Gina Tepoorten said.

No shots were fired in the incident and nobody was injured, Tepoorten said. Police have made arrangements to care for Frazier's 88-year-old mother, who uses a wheelchair.

Police were called to the house in the 600 block of 15th Street at Taylor Street at 8:30 p.m. Thursday by Frazier's sister, who asked authorities to check on her mother, police spokeswoman Gina Tepoorten said. When police arrived, Frazier came to the door with a shotgun and refused to leave. Police then surrounded the home.

Around 3 a.m., a SWAT team made contact with Frazier through a telephone they tossed into the house, Tepoorten said.

About 21 neighbors were evacuated to a nearby church, Tepoorten said. The standoff snarled traffic in the area.

Frazier lives in the house with his mother but has a history of being uncooperative with her, authorities said.
